Upper Cumberland mental health leaders talk gun violence & mental health reform.

The death of 50 people at two New Zealand mosques this week remind us that gun violence can strike anywhere, anytime. And when these type of events happen, we ask ourselves why or what can be done. Changes to gun laws – that’s certainly one of the first suggestions, but it’s followed closesly by the call for mental health reform. Today we bring together four Upper Cumberland leaders in mental health to dig deeper on that subject.

Jim & Theresa Loftis share their interest in the American Revolution & Civil War

Jim and Theresa Loftis enjoy learning history by recreating it. They have spent years exploring the roots of everything from the American Revolution to the Civil War. In particular, how those times in the 1700 and 1800s played out here in the Upper Cumberland. Sometimes history brings us face to face with questions that when confronted with modern views, makes a lot of people uncomfortable. Civil War history in the South is certainly one of those. But the reenactors see their work as bringing to life something for which audio and video do not exist.

As the leader in educator training, the staff at Tennessee Tech understands the challenges facing teachers today, and their own challenge. Many young people are dismissing teaching as a profession. So Tennessee Tech’s administrators and professors have come together to work on ways to make teaching a destination profession.

Marla Williams talks providing legal aid to vulnerable residents across our area

32 attornies, 48 counties across the state of Tennessee served. A non-profit lawfirm designed to help low income citizens in 5 different practice areas. It is the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands. The Society gives vulnerable residents across our area an advocate. Marla Williams came to the society after growing up in Clay County and graduating from the University of Louisville Law School.

Lilian Hargrove talks the teacher shortage in the US & what’s being done at home

From 2007 to 2016, the American Association of Colleges For Teacher Education reported a 23% decline in the number of people who completed Teacher Preparation programs across the United States. There are many estimates that by 2020 and beyond, America could be facing a significant teacher shortage. In fact, 28 of the 50 states are already reporting difficulties in finding enough teachers. Work has already begin in the state of Tennessee, and more specifically in the Upper Cumberland, to deal with the issue. The Highland Chamber’s Lillian Hartgrove is also the Chair of the State Board of Education. She along with Putnam County Schools Director Jerry Boyd are not waiting for the shortfall to happen. They’re focused on what can be done now to prevent teacher shortages here.

That’s leading to a coming teacher shortage across the United States. Here at home, work underway to help prevent this from becoming a crisis…led by Lillian Hartgrove of the Highlands Chamber. Lillian also chairs the state board of education, where she is leading work on the issue. The Chamber working with local school executives including Putnam County Director of Schools Jerry Boyd. What can be done? How big a factor does money play in this issue?
