The issue of suicide among celebrities, middle aged men and other age groups.

A growing number of people are choosing to commit, or attempt the act of suicide. Across the country there has been an increase in the last several years. Laura Tedesco, Vice President of Crisis Services and Anne Stamps, Director at Plateau Mental Health Center in Cookeville join us as we try to understand this issue. How we address those who need help and the resources available in our area.

The growing number of teens engaging in sexting, messages with sexual content.

It’s risky behavior that exposes them to potential predators, bullying among their peers and often a sense of shame. Messages, images and in some cases videos of a sexual nature or with explicit content.  Cookeville High School guidance counselor Lori Strode and Detective Roger Cooper with the Putnam County Sherriff’s Department join us to examine this dangerous and growing trend and its impact.

Today In The Upper Cumberland: Comprehensive Pain Clinics Closing

The potential for health risks as several pain clinics close across Tennessee.

Comprehensive Pain Specialists recently announced that 21 of their clinics across the state will close at the end of July, inlcuding one in Cookeville. Director Barbara Kanapel and Regional Overdose Prevention Specialist Suzanne Angel work with the Smith County Drug Prevention Coalition. They help us answer the questions of how this will impact patients and what they need to know to find alternatives.

Tennessee Tech Professor Lindsey Upton works to understand these instances of sexual harassment that can occur and their impact on students and faculty.

We get advice from Dr. Erin Rohman and Dietician Catherine Winter on how to diagnose an allergy and how to learn to live with one.

Today In The Upper Cumberland: Elder Abuse

Working towards ending the abuse of older adults across the Upper Cumberland.

According to the National Council on Aging approximately 1 in 10 Americans aged 60 and over have experienced some form of elder abuse. Melody Miller and April Hibdon are the co-chairs for the Upper Cumberland Adult Abuse Coalition. They works with various agencies and groups to help report abuse when they can, and assist where needed.

Our elected officials are expected to comply with the standards of ethics we’ve adopted and made law. Tennessee Citizens Action is a group that investigates allegations of improper conduct by state and local officials and work to hold them accountable when they don’t comply. Director Andy Spears talks about the challenges they face in working to represent the interest of the public.
