During this 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage, we look back with Tennessee historian Paula Casey. Once women got the right to vote in 1920, with Tennessee the final state to pass the constitutional amendment, women found their voice across the nation. And more importantly, found their voice across the Upper Cumberland.

It is the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote. And you may not know it, but Tennessee played a central role in making that happen across our nation, and there were efforts all across the Upper Cumberland in 1919 and 1920 that led the Tennessee legislature to make that move. We explore the history of women’s suffrage with author Paula Casey. She served as president of the Tennessee Women’s Suffrage Monument. She’s also written exclusively on this anniversary, and the women and men who moved the issue forward – some of them, Upper Cumberland residents.
