Brantley Gilberts’s song “One Hell of an Amen” was inspired by a couple of real-life guys. One was his buddy Kory who faced up to his fatal Leukemia diagnosis by telling the doctor to, quote, “Bring it on!”
The other was a soldier named Jon who gave his life for our country. Brantley explains, quote, “One of my friends went to Iraq on several tours. He had a best friend over there who passed away just a couple feet from where he was positioned.
“When he told me the story it made me feel like I was right there with him. The way he told me the story . . . it punched me in the chest.”
Even though both stories are sad, Brantley says the song is, quote, “about the good fight. It’s about the attitude, the strength and the courage those boys had for what they were going through. Kory battling Leukemia and Jon fighting in Iraq.
“It’s about two different wars. Anytime you go out fighting for your life or fighting for your country, that’s ‘One Hell of an Amen’.”
