Afghan VP says U.S. “legitimized” Taliban and must “remain engaged”

Afghanistan’s First Vice President Amrullah Saleh told CBS News’ Charlie D’Agata that as U.S. forces withdraw from his country, it was the American government that “legitimized” the Taliban in the first place, and now Afghans “need the United States to remain engaged,” even if it’s not the same real-time, direct military assistance that has been the norm for 20 years. If Taliban storms back to power, Afghans “ready to fight”

“There are a lot of people who are ready to fight” if Afghanistan’s domestic security forces can’t stand up to the Taliban and their extremist allies without U.S. military support, Ahmad Massoud told CBS News’ Charlie D’Agata. “If the situation goes towards a war,” the son of a legendary anti-Taliban militia leader said, “we will be ready, and it will be a structured resistance.” Source
