Maui emergency chief quits in wake of warning siren controversy

Herman Andaya, the head of the Maui Emergency Management Agency, resigned abruptly Thursday after he was leveled with significant criticism for his decision not to activate the island’s warning sirens when wildfires broke out on Aug. 8. Hawaii’s attorney general said that a private organization will be brought in to conduct an “impartial, independent review” of the wildfire response. Jonathan Vigliotti has more. Source

COVID hospitalizations up 60% as booster slated to arrive soon

COVID-19 hospitalizations rose about 60% in the first week of August compared to just a month ago, according to CDC data. Youth climate group puts social justice spin on Dungeons & Dragons

A California climate organization for young people is putting its own twist on the popular board game Dungeons & Dragons. The Oakland-based group is creating a collection of 10 original role-playing adventures in which players tackle social and environmental issues rather than fictional monsters. Lil Milagro Henriquez, founder and executive director of Mycelium Youth Network, joins CBS News to explain the game’s rules and discuss what the organization hopes young people take away from playing. With China threat looming, Biden hosts Japan, South Korea leaders in trilateral summit

President Biden on Friday hosted the first ever trilateral summit at Camp David with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. Although Mr. Biden insisted the summit was not about China, the three leaders released a joint statement condemning China’s “dangerous and aggressive” military moves in the South China Sea.
