California lacks inmate firefighters due to COVID prison releases

Identifiable by their orange jumpsuits, prison inmates have long worked to fight wildfires in California. But now, The New York Times reports the firefighting force has been reduced by a program releasing prisoners back into their homes. Farmers and local communities come together to overcome pandemic-related hurdles

In the latest Small Business Pulse Survey by the Census Bureau, almost 79 percent of businesses across the nation reported experiencing negative effects of the pandemic. Farmers at Mile High Fungi in Colorado and Chesapeake Farm to Table in Maryland also encountered their fair share of challenges, but were able to overcome them with the help of their local communities.
